My 20-year-old son is home from college for the summer. The other night at dinner he announced that
he wants to get his PSM certification. Now seeing as he is an Agriculture and Microbiology major
this really struck me odd.
He explained that he has heard me postulate on the value of Scrum for many years and he is starting to
think that it might benefit him immediately with complex projects he works on, and long term by
broadening his skills and background. If nothing else, it will certainly look good on a
resume.
While I had had been preaching to him for years about empiricism, it never occurred to me that any
of it was actually sticking. Suddenly I felt vindicated.
So, we have created an initial product backlog that looks something like this:
- Manage your certification preparation in Sprints so that you can practice the “Shu” portion of your training.
- Read Jeff Southerlands Book so that you will have context.
- Have a one-hour conversation per week with your father where you apply Scrum
- values to scenarios your father provides so that you can simulate real-life experiences.
- Read and study the Agile Manifesto so you will understand the foundation of Scrum.
- Read and study the Scum Guide from Scrum.org so you understand the framework.
- Take the practice exams until you can consistently score 100% so that you will have an
- understanding of the types of questions you will be asked.
- Take the exam so that you can become a certified Scrum Master.
I am intrigued about where this journey will lead. But I ever so excited to take my son on it and give him
experiences that will help him in his personal life and his professional life.
